24/06/2016: 10 bottlenose dolphins and 1 Atlantic grey seal

2hr survey. Start time 07:00
Weather conditions: fair/overcast, sea state 1-2, wind direction S/SW
Four bottlenose dolphins

From the beginning of the survey period, four bottlenose dolphins were observed entering the bay from beyond the headland to the west. Throughout the survey period, the dolphins were observed travelling around the bay, taking long dives and thought to be foraging at depth off the headland, and displaying splashy behaviour at the surface of the water for a brief period. Gannets were also seen diving amongst them off the headland.

2hr survey. Start time 09:00
Weather conditions: overcast/rain, sea state 2-3, wind direction S/SW
Six bottlenose dolphins

Two bottlenose dolphins seen at the end of the previous survey period were still observed travelling and foraging in the bay from the beginning of the survey period. Roughly midway through the survey period, a lone bottlenose dolphin was briefly observed taking long dives and thought to be foraging at depth north of New Quay harbour wall. Two bottlenose dolphins were also seen travelling west across the bay towards the headland. At the end of the survey period, a lone bottlenose dolphin was observed taking long dives and thought to be foraging at depth close to the harbour wall.

2hr survey. Start time 11:00
Weather conditions: fair/sunny, sea state 2, wind direction SW
Three bottlenose dolphins

The lone bottlenose dolphin seen at the end of the previous survey period was still observed foraging and taking long dives close to the harbour wall. Midway through the survey period, a pair of bottlenose dolphins was seen taking long dives and thought to be foraging at depth between the harbour wall and the headland. The pair were observed travelling with some leaping, before settling close to the end of the harbour wall to continue foraging. By the end of the survey period, one of the pair was still seen forging close to the harbour wall.

2hr survey. Start time 13:00
Weather conditions: sunny, sea state 3, wind direction SW
One bottlenose dolphin and one Atlantic grey seal

The lone bottlenose dolphin seen at the end of the previous survey period was still observed foraging and taking long dives north-east of the harbour wall, continuing to do so for about an hour before disappearing. In the last half an hour of the survey period, a lone Atlantic grey seal was spotted in the water close to the harbour wall.
