23/07/2016: Nine bottlenose dolphins

2hr survey. Start time 07:00
Weather conditions: fair, sea state 1, wind direction S/SE
Two bottlenose dolphins

Halfway into the survey period one bottlenose dolphin was seen travelling across the survey area in an easterly direction. It was seen foraging between headland and cardinal marker and was later joined by a second bottlenose dolphin. The pair was seen taking long dives, thought to be foraging, until the end of the survey.

2hr survey. Start time 09:00
Weather conditions: sunny/fair/overcast, sea state 1, wind direction SE-SW
Four bottlenose dolphins

The two bottlenose dolphins from the previous survey remained in the survey area for over an hour. They were seen between headland and cardinal marker, mingling at the surface and taking long dives thought to be foraging at depth, before leaving the survey area. In the last 15 minutes of the survey period four bottlenose dolphins, including a calf, were seen lunging north of the harbour wall.

2hr survey. Start time 11:00
Weather conditions: overcast/fair, sea state 1-2, wind direction W/SW
Five bottlenose dolphins

At the beginning of the survey period five bottlenose dolphins were seen in the bay, among them the mother and calf from the previous survey. They were seen taking long dives, thought to be foraging at depth. Gradually the bottlenose dolphins left the survey area, with one bottlenose dolphin still being seen north of the harbour wall at the end of the survey.

2hr survey. Start time 13:00
Weather conditions: fair/overcast, sea state 1-2, wind direction W/NW
Two bottlenose dolphins

Bottlenose dolphins were again seen throughout this survey. The bottlenose dolphin from the previous survey was seen travelling and taking long dives between harbour wall and cardinal marker. It was joined by a second bottlenose dolphin for a short while and was later seen displaying splashy behaviour by the cardinal marker.

2hr survey. Start time 15:00
Weather conditions: fair/overcast, sea state 1-2, wind direction NW
Two bottlenose dolphins

One bottlenose dolphin remained in the survey area and was seen taking long dives, thought to be foraging at depth, north of the harbour wall. In the second half of the survey the bottlenose dolphin was seen by the cardinal marker, again thought to be foraging at depth, when it was joined by a second bottlenose dolphin for the last half hour of the survey period.

2hr survey. Start time 17:00
Weather conditions: overcast, sea state 1, wind direction N/NW
Two bottlenose dolphins

The last sighting of dolphins was made at the very beginning of the survey period when the two bottlenose dolphin from the previous survey were seen leaving the survey area in a westerly direction, thought to be searching for prey while on the move.
