20/09/13 – Bottlenose dolphins and an Atlantic grey seal

2 hour survey, start time: 09:00
Weather conditions: sunny, sea state 3, wind N-NW
Three bottlenose dolphins including one calf and one Atlantic grey seal

Towards the end of the first half of the survey a mother and calf bottlenose dolphin and a second adult were seen foraging around the cardinal buoy near the harbour. The mother and calf were only sighted for around a quarter of an hour and then were only seen again during the last half hour of the survey period. The second adult was seen throughout the second half of the survey period. All three dolphins appeared to be foraging at depth. During the last 15 minutes of the survey a male Atlantic grey seal popped up close to the harbour wall.

2 hour survey, start time: 11:00
Weather conditions: sunny, sea state 2, wind NW
Three bottlenose dolphins

Throughout the survey period there were bottlenose dolphins foraging at depth close to the cardinal buoy – however, they were mainly all separated; with long dives in between surfacing. In the first hour there were three adults observed and then throughout the second hour only two were seen. In the last half hour of the survey period, this foraging involved faster circling and longer staying on the surface.

2 hour survey, start time: 13:00
Weather conditions: sunny, sea state 2, wind W
Five adult bottlenose dolphins and one calf

In the first hour of the survey three adult bottlenose dolphins were seen foraging at depth around the cardinal buoy near the harbour. Over the remainder of the survey period five adults and a calf were travelling east close to the buoys just outside the harbour, regularly surfacing and at times taking longer dives possibly searching for prey.

2 hour survey, start time: 15:00
Weather conditions: sunny, sea state 1, wind W
Two adult bottlenose dolphins and one calf

Two adult bottlenose dolphins and one calf were only sighted during the first half hour of the survey. They were first seen travelling in a south easterly direction then changed course and headed north-west.
