17/05/2015: Ten bottlenose dolphins, one Atlantic grey seal.

2hr survey. Start time 7:00.
Weather conditions: Sunny/fair, wind direction SW, sea state 3-4.

A group of four bottlenose dolphins, including one calf and one juvenile, were observed near the harbour wall taking long dives, thought to be foraging at depth. Towards the end of the survey period, three individuals from this group were still near the harbour wall, and one individual was observed near the cardinal buoy.

2hr survey. Start time 9:00.
Weather conditions: Fair, wind direction SW, sea state 3.

The bottlenose dolphins from the previous survey period were still observed in the survey area. At the beginning of the survey period two individuals were seen near the harbour wall milling at the surface, with three dolphins observed milling at the surface near the cardinal buoy. All five were then soon observed travelling west, away from the cardinal buoy, with long dives and irregular surfacing, which could indicate that they were searching for prey whilst on the move. All five individuals then changed direction near the harbour wall, travelling south with regular surfacing and a consistent heading, before being observed north of the harbour wall. In the second half of the survey period all five individuals were observed mingling at the surface near the cardinal buoy, with displays of leaps/tail slaps/lunges, before moving back towards the harbour wall still displaying this behaviour. At the end of the survey period all five individuals were observed travelling west, towards the headland, with long dives and irregular surfacing, possibly again searching for prey on the move.

2hr survey. Start time 15:00.
Weather conditions: Overcast, wind direction SW, sea state 2-3.

In the first half of the survey period one Atlantic grey seal was observed in the water close to the fish factory. In the second half of the survey period the seal was observed in the water again, close to harbour wall. Towards the end of the second half of the survey period, as well as the seal, five bottlenose dolphins, including one calf, were also observed near the harbour wall travelling south with regular surfacing and keeping a consistent heading. At the end of the survey period four of the bottlenose dolphins were observed taking long dives, through to be foraging at depth, near the cardinal buoy.
