04/08/2013 – bottlenose dolphins and common dolphins

2 hour survey, start time: 9:00
Weather conditions: overcast, sea state 3, wind S-SE

At the start of the survey one bottlenose dolphin was spotted foraging east of the fish factory.  Four common dolphins, including two calves were spotted travelling east, towards the cardinal buoy, where they leapt and foraged for 30minutes.  At the same time, two bottlenose dolphins (a mother and calf) were spotted foraging south of the cardinal buoy and three bottlenose dolphins were spotted foraging near the harbour wall, where they stayed for most of the survey.  After 45 minutes, two bottlenose dolphins were spotted leaping near the fish factory and three more bottlenose dolphins, including a calf were spotted north of the harbour wall, travelling back and forth at the surface, before foraging and leaping.  Finally three common dolphins were spotted leaping east of the fish factory.

2 hour survey, start time: 11:00
Weather conditions: overcast with rain, sea state 1-3, wind S

Four common dolphins were spotted catching fish at the surface near the fish factory.  One bottlenose dolphin was spotted foraging in the same area, before joining a second bottlenose dolphin and travelling east.  One Atlantic grey seal was spotted near the harbour wall in the water.  Five bottlenose dolphins, including one calf were spotted catching fish, NE of the fish factory and were joined by a group of three travelling bottlenose dolphins.  The large group of bottlenose dolphins continued disperse and reform into a large group, whilst foraging and catching fish.  Finally two common dolphins were spotted east of the fish factory, catching fish.
