03/10/2013 – Bottlenose dolphins and Atlantic Grey Seals

2 hour survey, start time 09:00
Weather conditions overcast, sea state 2, wind SE-E
14 bottlenose dolphins including three calves and one atlantic grey seal

At the beginning of the survey there were 5 different groups of bottlenose dolphins spread between the fish factory and the cardinal buoy. The groups were carrying out a range of activities with some of them travelling and thought to be searching for prey on the move, some that were staying in one area with leaps, lunges and tail slaps and others that were either milling around on the surface or doing long dives so thought to be foraging at depth. Some of these smaller groups merged before then travelling away where there were no longer any dolphin sightings for the second half of the survey; however a female atlantic grey seal swam past the harbour wall and up to the fish factory.

2 hour survey, start time 15:00
Weather conditions overcast with rain, sea state 3-4, wind SE
11 Bottlenose dolphins and two atlantic grey seals

In the first hour there were no sightings and then all of a sudden several groups of bottlenose dolphins appeared very quickly. The different groups were enjoying the water conditions with lots of leaping around either staying in one area or travelling. The majority travelled East and then split into smaller groups but continued to leap at the surface, possibly chasing prey. After around 20 minutes of this they began heading West and some travelled past the fish factory. During these dolphin sightings there were two atlantic grey seals spotted; one swimming close to the harbour wall and another further out at sea and closer to the fish factory.
