03/08/2013 – Bottlenose dolphins

2 hour survey, start time: 9:00
Weather conditions: sunny, sea state 2, wind WSW
Ten bottlenose dolphins and one Atlantic grey seal

Dolphins were seen throughout the survey. At the start of the survey a group of four bottlenose dolphins were seen leaping by the cardinal buoy. A group of six bottlenose dolphins including two calves were seen foraging by the fish factory. During the middle of the survey one Atlantic grey seal was seen in the water in front of the harbour wall. For the remainder of the survey a group of three bottlenose dolphins including one calf were seen foraging between the cardinal buoy and the fish factory.

Seven bottlenose dolphins

Dolphins were seen foraging throughout the survey in small groups. The areas in which the dolphins were recorded foraging were mainly by the cardinal buoy and by the fish factory. Some dolphins were seen milling around in front of the harbour wall including a mother and a calf. One individual was seen chasing prey at the surface and tossing fish into the air.

Six bottlenose dolphins

Dolphins were seen for the majority of the survey period. Three individuals were seen travelling out towards the cardinal buoy where they were later seen foraging for food. Dolphins were seen foraging by the cardinal buoy for the majority of the survey. There was a 15 minute period between 14:15 and 14:30 where no dolphins were seen.
