Our Mammal Mission Appeal East Glamorgan

The Wildlife Trust of South and West Wales is on a mission to help wildlife in East Glamorgan, but we need your help…

It’s no secret that wildlife is struggling. It’s vitally important that we’re doing all we can to protect them. Unfortunately our resources only go so far until we rely on kind donations from people like you. By donating to this appeal you will be helping us to protect wildlife in East Glamorgan.

What we’ve been doing so far…

Dormice Tube Surveys were carried out at Coed Garnllwyd but none have been found to date. Although we did find a few woodmouse nests. We’ve also created plenty of habitat piles which will be used by small mammals. At Parc Slip Nature Reserve in Bridgend, we’ve been surveying for Harvest Mice nests with volunteers and found two potential old nests! We’ve done hay cuts and scrub control on the meadows to maintain a habitat for them. And at Llyn Fach in the Valleys we’ve been focusing on Water Voles. We’ve undertaken seasonal surveys around the lake and controlled scrub on the edges to prevent shading and to make it an ideal place for Water Voles. We’ve also been monitoring for Mink which would predate on Water Voles.

What we’d like to do with your help…

The Dormice boxes need replacing at Coed y Bedw in Cardiff and both Coed Y Bedw and Coed Garnllwyd need coppicing to benefit Dormice. We would also like to carry out more nest surveys in our meadows at Parc Slip, as well as continuing further surveys within the wider landscape at Llyn Fach to find out how far the habitat and population of Water Voles extends.
