Volunteering on Skomer

Volunteer applications for 2017 will open from 1 September (closing on 1 October). More details to come shortly.

Volunteer Applications for 2017:

Voluntary Assistant Wardens are required on Skomer Island from 25 March to 30 September inclusive.

We take up to six Voluntary Assistant Wardens each week (Saturday to Saturday), to help with managing day visitors, assisting with overnight guests and their accommodation, conservation work including monitoring and surveys, and building maintenance.

2017 Short-term volunteer information (Word doc) or 2017 Short-term volunteer information (PDF) gives more information on what we expect from Skomer volunteers and gives more information on applying.

The minimum age is 16 years. You will need to be able to walk several miles each day and to carry luggage up a steep, long, flight of steps several times a day. You need to enjoy working outside in all weather conditions including strong sunshine, heavy rain and strong winds.

You will need to be happy talking to members of the public, have a cheerful and customer friendly approach to sometimes difficult situations. When the island is closed to visitors you will be helping out on the reserve. This may include maintenance of buildings and control of vegetation.

Please see our leaflet on volunteering on Skomer here.

How to book?

The Trust operates a recruitment and selection process for the Skomer volunteering opportunities. As well as people’s practical and conservation skills we will also take into account knowledge of the island and, where multiple applications are equal in merit, membership of the Trust will continue to provide priority to places as a way of saying thank you for your support (membership costs just £2.05 per month). Applicants can indicate their preferred weeks and can volunteer from one to three weeks.

All applicants should complete the 2017 Short-term volunteer application form (PDF Format) or 2017 Short-term volunteer application form (Word doc). Please email completed forms to skomer.assistant@welshwildlife.org (Applications by post cannot be taken into consideration). The closing date is 1 October 2016 and successful applicants will be informed within three weeks of this date. Please do not send payment at this stage. You will be sent an invoice in Winter and payment should be received within four weeks of the invoice date.

Please do not send letters or CVs as only the application form will be considered.

If you have any queries on this please phone the assistant warden on 07816 990371 or contact the booking office on 01656 724100 between 9am and 5pm, Monday to Friday or email islands@welshwildlife.org.

A reminder will be sent, along with further information, about 12 weeks before you are due to go to the island.
