Resident full time Wardens oversee the running of the Island which is open to visitors between April and October. During the season we have vacancies for up to six Volunteer Wardens each week (Saturday to Saturday) from March, to assist with conservation work (bird and seal surveys), buildings maintenance, managing day visitors and assisting with overnight paying guests. Demand is high, so we limit the stay to two weeks except in special circumstances.

You need to be 16 years old, physically fit and willing to work long hours. In general, no previous experience is necessary but please notify us of any skills you may have so that they may be put to best use on the Island by the Wardens.  We try also to cater for disabilities; adequate prior notification of such is essential if special needs are to be met  to overcome any difficulties in working on the Island.

Volunteers' quartersVolunteers' quarters

Accommodation is simple. It has been rebuilt and consists of two bunk-bedded rooms and one twin bedded room with toilet and shower facilities. Duvets and pillows are provided but you should bring pillow cases and either duvet cover and undersheet or sleeping bag and under sheet. Stout footwear, warm and waterproof clothing are essential. There are no laundry facilities.

Volunteers' kitchenVolunteers' kitchen

There is no charge for being a volunteer but you must bring your own food (enough for a week and an extra day or so in case bad weather strands you on the island). Volunteers have their own kitchen with cooking and refrigeration by gas. There is solar powered electricity for lighting and hot water - do not leave hot taps running, the hot water is limited! While there is now a good supply of water on the island in a storage tank you may also like to bring some extra drinking water and wet wipes come in useful if there is a water shortage.

Once your booking has been confirmed you will be sent details of these requirements along with some other guidance and useful contact details about travel, local accommodation, boat times etc.

Free boat passage to and from the Island is included.
