Cardiff Garden Wildlife Survey

As many of you will know by now, the Wildlife Trust of South and Wales (WTSWW) has been running a Garden Wildlife Survey in Cardiff, aiming to discover the hidden biodiversity treasures that live in our Capital City.

The survey forms were delivered to homes in Cardiff throughout spring 2009 with the aim of involving residents to record the wildlife they see in their gardens and all the different habitats that make gardens such important refuges for wildlife in urban areas.

To date WTSWW has received over 500 completed survey forms, which equates to over 2,000 volunteer hours and many new species records (Table 1), including 91 records of hedgehog and seven new records of Great Crested Newt – a European Protected Species.

Species / HabitatNumber of New Records
Hedgehog91
Bat Roost5
Slow Worm31
Great Crested Newt7
Peacock Butterfly 54
Song Thrush104
House Sparrow178
Pond161
Bird Feeders476

Table 1 shows the number of new records for a nine of the 43 species and habitat questions asked during the survey.

WTSWW has been overwhelmed with the positive response to the survey and would like to thank all those volunteer recorders for taking part and making the survey such a success.

The data collected will be used to help WTSWW to undertake further conservation work in the Capital City, by highlighting where gaps in wildlife habitat occur. Once this is known we can link up existing habitat through habitat creation to act as wildlife corridors across Cardiff, ensuring that plants and animals are able to move more freely and colonise new areas.

Of course WTSWW cannot do this without the continued help and support from the people of Cardiff who have been so enthusiastic during the survey. It is hoped that together we can provide wildlife havens even in the most urban areas of Cardiff for the benefit of wildlife and people.
